ACID STAINING

Most acid stains are a mixture of water, hydrochloric acid, and acid-soluble metal salts. They act by penetrating the surface and chemically reacting with the hydrated lime (calcium hydroxide) in the concrete. The acid in the stain etches the surface slightly, allowing metal salts to penetrate more easily. Once the stain reacts, it becomes a permanent part of the concrete and will not fade, chip, or peel. The palette for acid etching staining is generally limited to earth tones, such as tans, browns, terra cotta, and soft blue-green.
